Like a powerful musical storm, he blows you away. Named by Elmore Magazine as one of the killer artists you need to hear right now and selected by Relix magazine as a featured artist.

Spencer started his musical career in Oakland. During those Chitlin’ Circuit days, you could find him dead center in the funk bands of JohnnyTolbert and DeThangs and Marvin Holmes and the Uptights. These legendary bands played in historic 7th Street soul pumping venues behind such legends as Etta James, the Whispers, Charlie Musselwhite, Lowell Fulsom and ZZ Hill, and opened for Bobby Blue Bland, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and Smokey Robinson.

In 2020 his Star was placed on the Walk of Fame in his hometown along with artists like Etta James, BB King. Previously in 2013 he was honored by the State of California and City of Los Angeles as an inductee of the Living Legend Foundation along with Les McCann, Barbara Morrison, Gerald Wilson, Buddy Collette and many other legendary musicians.

His trademark sound can be found on records by Timex Social Club, Sonny Rhodes, JJ Bad Boy Jones, Jimmy McCracklin, just to name a few and his original music appears on the Grammy nominated Force of Nature album by Koko Taylor (with a guitar solo by Buddy Guy)!

  • “Bobby Hurricane Spencer dishes out large portions of smokin' hot tenor saxophone licks, as well as vocals that range from tender to gritty. Whether Spencer is a saxophonist who also sings or a vocalist that can play is a tossup. He is equally at home -- Spencer has a commanding presence with the deep resonance of his voice and the intensity of his tenor. . . . .a giant sized bowl of thick and rich blues, jazz, funk, and an R&B stew. For Spencer this is a culmination of decades in the business. For the listener perhaps more of a celebration.”
    Jim Worsley, All About Jazz
  • "I could go on and on commenting about Mr. Hurricane's playing and soloing, his tone and finesse on tenor, unique as it is. But just as much I love his songs and I especially love his voice. Listening to his music online, the tracks from his albums deliver lush arrangements with funky grooves and rocket-high solos. His voice is sexy, tough and on the ready with every nuance of lyric from his pen.
Nikki Armstrong, Big City Rhythm & Blues
  • “In the guitar-centric world of modern blues, it is wonderful to have sax players like Spencer to remind us of the power and joy of great horn playing. He also has a warm, sensuous singing voice, capable of injecting knowing tongue-in-cheek humour at will, If you like blues with a heavy dash of soul and funk, topped off some top-of-the-range sax playing, you will like Hurricane Unleashed.”
    Rhys Williams, Blues Blast Magazine
  • “What’d I Say Column: Six Killer Blues Artists You Need To Hear Right Now: Saxophonist/singer/songwriter Bobby “Hurricane” Spencer blows in from the West Coast with a sound that hearkens back to great soul sax players like King Curtis, Hank Crawford and Grover Washington, Jr. Spencer and his band lay down blues, ballads, funk and two killer instrumental covers: “Honky Tonk” and Washington’s “Mr. Magic.” Transport yourself back to the sounds of those great sax players of old and enjoy Spencer’s down-home approach.”
    Jim Hynes, Elmore Magazine
  • “Easy listening putting a smile on your face, dancing in your feet and then some ice in your drink. The vocals throughout are distinctive and throaty full of emotion, adding to the feel of the album. Hurricane Unleashed is an album sparkling with musical gems, taking you to blues driven saxophone heaven. If you like blues stirred but not shaken with jazz, doo wop a touch of Latino and funk this album will not fail to please.”
